Bank of America profits grow 15%, avoids industry crisis

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 12:14:22 GMT

NEW YORK (AP) — Bank of America said its profits grew 15% last quarter, the latest of the big banks to do exceptionally well this earnings season as investors and consumers flock to Wall Street for safety after the failure of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank. The nation’s second-largest bank by assets posted a profit of $8.2 billion, up from $7.1 billion in the same period a year earlier. On a per-share basis, BofA earnings rose to 94 cents from 80 cents. The results beat analysts’ expectations. Like its major competitors, BofA has benefitted from wealthy clients, businesses and other customers running to the bank as a place of safety after last month’s bank failures. The nation’s biggest banks are seen as having an implicit government backstop, due to their “too big to fail” status among the country’s financial institutions. The Charlotte, North Carolina-based bank added customers in its business and consumer banking businesses. While deposits ac...

NATO chief warns global arms control system at risk of ‘collapse’

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 12:14:22 GMT

The global system that once limited the rapid proliferation of arms is at risk of extinction, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg warned on Tuesday, as he rebuked Russia and China.“We stand at a crossroads,” the NATO chief said at a conference on arms control organized by the alliance and the U.S. State Department. “In one direction lies the collapse of the international arms control order and the unrestricted proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, with profoundly dangerous consequences,” Stoltenberg said. But, he added: “There is an alternative way ahead — one where we do the work, however difficult.”His remarks come just weeks after Russia suspended its participation in the last remaining nuclear arms control treaty it had with the United States — putting a coda on a period of eroding arms control pacts worldwide.  The development has occurred alongside a significant arms buildup from both Russia and China, as well as Moscow’s wartime nuclear saber-r...

Russian court dismisses jailed Wall Street Journal reporter’s appeal

MOSCOW — A Moscow city court on Tuesday dismissed American journalist Evan Gershkovich’s appeal to be released from a high-security jail where he is being held on espionage charges.  Gershkovich’s defense team had requested that the Wall Street Journal correspondent be transferred to house arrest, another jail or released on bail. Although the outcome of the appeal hearing was never really in doubt, it was significant as the first time Gershkovich has been seen in public since he was arrested last month in the Ural mountains’ city of Yekaterinburg. Confined to a glass cage, as is customary for defendants facing criminal charges in Russia, Gershkovich seemed tense but composed. Ahead of the hearing he even flashed a couple of smiles at some of those colleagues and attendants he recognized, before the courtroom was emptied and the hearing began. Espionage cases in Russia are veiled in secrecy and held behind closed doors.A handful of journalists were al...

On Monday, the Jets had a visit with UAB running back prospect DeWayne McBride less than two weeks before the 2023 NFL Draft. But is running back a position Gang Green should target April 27-29?“When you look at Breece [Hall] and Ty Johnson, and Michael Carter and [Zonovan] ‘Bam’ Knight, the guys that we have in that room, we’re really excited about the guys that we have,” Jets coach Robert Saleh said at the NFL Annual Meetings last month.Although the Jets selected Hall in the second round of last year’s draft, the answer is yes.Hall tore his ACL last October in a victory at Denver.
