MEXICO CITY — Even a home run trot can be tiring a mile and a half above sea level, and there were plenty of test cases Saturday in the Giants’ 16-11 loss to the Padres. But perhaps none more visceral than Brandon Crawford, who did it twice in the span of two pitches.“Even though it was just a slow jog around the bases, it’s still a little tiring at this altitude,” Crawford said. “But I didn’t mind.”It was that kind of night for the Giants and Padres, who combined to leave the yard 11 times in the first regular-season MLB game in the Mexican capital. The homers traveled a total of 4,858 feet — a career-long and game-high 482 feet on Crawford’s third-inning blast — still well short of Mexico City’s 7,350-foot elevation.Crawford was called back to home plate after rounding the bases for his first time, after his curving line drive down the right field line was initially ruled a home run but was determined to be foul upon replay review. BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Tens of thousands of Hungarians flocked to Budapest’s main square Sunday for Pope Francis’ final Mass, gathering on the banks of the Danube as the pontiff wrapped up a weekend visit to the heart of Europe with pleas for a peaceful end to Russia’s war next door. The Mass on Kossuth Lajos Square, with the Hungarian parliament and Budapest’s famed Chain Bridge as a backdrop, provided the visual highlight of Francis’ three-day visit that has been dominated by the Vatican’s concern for the plight of neighboring Ukraine.Citing local organizers, the Vatican said some 50,000 people were participating at the Mass, more than 30,000 of them in the square on a brilliantly sunny spring morning. LONDON (AP) — Heather Howarth tugged at King Charles III’s ears and tittered with satisfaction. The other ladies who gather to knit and natter in her small English village thought the ears should be bigger. But when creating a crocheted likeness of the new king, she was determined not to cause offense.“He might not like this one,” she said reaching out to give the king a fond pat. “But he’ll love his Grenadier Guards!”Howarth and her friends in the village of Hurst, a stone’s throw from Reading, west of London, have fashioned a woolly coronation procession to rival the pomp and circumstance that will take place when Charles is crowned on May 6 at Westminster Abbey. Sheathing the 29 posts that circle the community pond with their knitted and crocheted creations, the women have recreated the cast of characters set to attend the big event. There’s the king, of course, the queen consort and the Archbishop of Canterbury.
